How to Create Product Variants in Shopify

How to Create Product Variants in Shopify

Let's say you sell T-shirts. You probably carry them in small, medium, and large — and maybe in blue, black, and white. Instead of making a brand-new listing for every single combo, Shopify lets you add all of those options to one product listing using something called product variants.

This guide will walk you through how to create Shopify product variants from scratch. Whether you're brand new to e-commerce or just getting started with Shopify store setup, you'll have it figured out by the end of this post.

What are Shopify product variants?

A product variant is just a different version of the same item. Think of it like this: a red sneaker in size 9 is one variant. The same sneaker in blue, size 10 is a different variant. They're both "sneakers," but they're different choices your customer can pick from.

Shopify lets you add up to three options per product — like Size, Color, and Material — and combine them to create up to 100 variants for a single product. That covers most online stores pretty well!

How to add product variants in Shopify admin

Here's how to set up your first Shopify product variants step by step:

STEP 1 - Log in to your Shopify admin dashboard and click Products in the left menu. Then click an existing product, or hit Add product to create a new one.

STEP 2 - Scroll down the product page until you see a section called Variants. There's a checkbox that says "This product has options, like size or color." Click that box to turn it on.

STEP 3 - A new area will appear where you can type in your first option name. A new area will appear where you can type in your first option name.

Common choices are "Size," "Color," or "Style." Type the name you want and then add the values for that option — like S, M, L for sizes, or Red, Blue, Green for colors.

STEP 4 - Need more than one option? Click Add another option to add a second or third choice. Shopify will automatically mix and match all of your options to create every possible combination.

STEP 5 - Once your options are set, Shopify will show a list of all your variants. You can click on any one of them to set its own price, SKU (a unique product code), inventory count, and even a different photo if needed.

STEP 6 - When everything looks good, click Save. Your variants are now live on your product page and ready for customers to pick from.

PRO TIP!

Give each variant its own SKU code. This makes it much easier to track your inventory and avoid selling something that's already out of stock.

How to edit or delete a variant.

Made a mistake? No problem. Go back to your product, scroll to the "Variants" section, and click the variant you want to change. You can update the price, stock, or any other detail. To remove a variant you don't need, just open it and choose Delete variant at the bottom. Easy!

Adding images to each Shopify variant

One of the best features of Shopify product variants is that you can show a different photo for each one. When a customer picks "Blue," the product image can automatically switch to show the blue version. This makes shopping feel much smoother.

To do this, go to the Media section at the top of your product page and upload your images. Then scroll down to your variants list, click a variant, and under "Preview," you can pick which photo goes with it. This small step can really boost your Shopify store conversion rate.

Shopify variant pricing: can each variant have a different price?

Yes! Shopify variant pricing lets each version of a product have its own price. A large size might cost more than a small. A leather finish might cost more than cotton. Just click into the variant you want to update and change the price field. It's that simple.

You can also set different compare-at prices if you're running a sale, oradjust the cost-per-item field if you want to track your profit margin.

What if you need more than 100 variants?

No problem! Shopify recently raised the variant threshold to 2,048 variants per product and up to 3 options.  Want even more flexibility and options? Take a look into Shopify apps like Infinite Options or Bold Product Options. These apps plug right into your store and let you add unlimited product options beyond what Shopify includes out of the box.

Quick tips to manage Shopify variants like a pro

Here are a few things that make variant management much easier as your store grows:

Use bulk editing. From your Products page, select multiple items and choose "Edit products" to change prices or inventory for many variants at once — huge time saver.

Keep option names consistent. If some products use "Colour" and others use "Color," your store can look messy. Pick one spelling and stick with it across all your listings.

Track inventory per variant. Turn on inventory tracking for each variant so Shopify can automatically show "Out of stock" when something runs out. Customers will appreciate knowing before they try to order.

You're ready to go!

Setting up Shopify product variants doesn't have to be hard. Once you do it the first time, it becomes second nature. The key things to remember: turn on the variants option in your product settings, name your options clearly, set prices and inventory for each variant, and add photos where you can.

A well-organized product page with clean variants gives shoppers confidence and makes buying faster and easier — which is great for your bottom line. Now go set up those variants and watch your store shine!
